From Diane Setterfield's The Thirteenth Tale

People disappear when they die. Their voices, their laughter, the warmth of their breath. Their flesh. Eventually their bones. All living mempry of them ceases. This is both dreadful and natural. Yet for some there is an exception to this annihilation. For in the books they write they continut to exist. We can rediscover them. Their humour, their tone of voice, their moods. Through the written word they can anger you or make you happy. They can comfort you. They can perplex you. They can alter you. All this, even though they are dead. Like flies in amber, like corpses frozen in ice, that which according to the laws of nature should pass away is, by the miracle of ink on paper, preserved. It is a kind of magic.

Fourth Of July

We had a sweet Fourth of July. There were many many sweets involved anyways.
The little family and I headed down to Houston to celebrate with my mom and her brother and his kids who are visiting for a few weeks this summer. We threw a Fourth of July block party. It was fun. Apologies for there only being during and after shots of everything.
First up is the "California cake". poor thing was going to be so cute. One layer of red, one of white and one of blue with pink frosting (just to throw us off). Then it started sliding and leaning. So mom skewered it and popped it into the fridge. Where it promptly cracked and fell off the cake stand and all over the fridge.

The kiddos helped to decorate these cupcakes. Aunty Emm made the fancy star shapes. I mostly colored the frosting and spread it while other's decorated. We had tons of cupcakes. Three 'trees' full.

My dad came and made Cincinnati Chili. It was really good. Different, but yummy. I had some over the spaghetti and some on my hotdog. It's made with a bit of conamon in it. The cinnamon gives it totally different flavor.

Here is Jaedyn with a cupcake. I brought a cute red, white and blue outfit and instead she wore this nightdress length 'dress'. All well, we now know I'm not on top of it all. Ha! If you didn't know that before!

I forgot to get pictures of the decorations before we had people over... so you get to see what the paty looked like.

The food spread was on four tables outside and there was more inside. So much food!

I made that cute wood stacking thing. It was a fun project and helped my use up the spare wood in my pile. I didn't actually want it so I gave it to my mom.

I made cake pops and they turned out (for the first time)! There were three foam blocks of pops and by the time I went outside this was all that was left. I went outside as soon as I was done dipping them. Two blocks came back inside while I was still dipping and decorating. There was not even time to cameflauge the styrofoam blocks. They were a hit! Wee!

Here is my cousin, Cece, who helped me make lables for the food and stuff. I didn't grab a picture of Nick and the lables he helped make.

Here are some I made. It was fun to get my craft on... and have so many supplies! I love that about going to my mom's house. It's a crafters heaven.
